Mario Kersey drank a lot of Dr. Enuf soda in college while trying his hand at fiction. His 12,000 comic books prevent him from being bored as he works on new recipes like his pineapple shortcake. Writing keeps his mind engaged and helps him figure some things out.

BLACK Q-TIP
Sunlight can touch the soil in the rainforest
So, I don’t have a problem with the light
Cutting through my canopy. But I
Keep hearing my dad say “look a little thin”
Like I’m vain about my hair since
I live bald by choice but sometimes
I want to grow it out while standing in the shower
Waiting for the conditioner to work its magic
Then be annoyed after I get dressed only
To have some drops of water drip onto my dress shirt
Knowing damn well I had wrapped my head and
Furiously dried minus the dragon breath of a blow dryer.
A mini fro, black crown, weighing my head down
With its softness, the spouse complains about my
Case of hirsutism which doesn’t suit him
But it’s okay I don’t comment on his locks
That keep him chained in someone’s chair
For hours while the three-year old asks “when’s daddy coming home?”
